Special Projects: Bookbinding at its finest

We thought we’d treat you all to an amazing look at a project that our Senior Binder & Restorer Piotr Sakowicz recently created, a great example of bookbinding at its finest, and the production process involved in creating the bookcase to compliment it.

The book features a full leather binding covered in pale goatskin and is hand-dyed with spirit dye and decorated with craquelure.

Piotr worked with our creative team and the amazing folks at Bookbindesigns to create gold ants that were beautifully hand tooled across the book, with gold leaf imprinted into the leather, with custom colours and styles provided by the team at Foilco.

Title and author details across the spine were blocked with dark green pigment foil. The front picture was painted in watercolour. The book was decorated with a variety of foils and hand-sew endbands, and topped off with endpapers featuring suede leather.

CREATING THE CASE

To compliment his incredible book, Piotr created a beautiful bookcase. We thought we’d share a step by step photo case study of this procedure. Click on any image below to zoom in.
